Unit: Akhlaq & Manners · Lesson 40 of 50 · study cards + quiz
Bismillah and the right hand
Say "Bismillah" before eating, eat with the right hand, and eat from what is nearest to you — the three teachings the Prophet ﷺ gave young Umar ibn Abi Salamah.
Moderation
No vessel is worse to fill than the stomach: a third for food, a third for drink, and a third for air. Never criticize food — if he ﷺ disliked a dish, he simply left it.
Gratitude after eating
Finish with "Alhamdulillah". Whoever eats and says "Alhamdulillahil-ladhi at'amani hadha…" has his past minor sins forgiven. Sharing food brings barakah — food for one suffices two.
