A day built around prayer
Fajr (2 rakat) before sunrise; Dhuhr (4) after midday; Asr (4) in the afternoon; Maghrib (3) right after sunset; Isha (4) at night. The day of a Muslim revolves around these meetings.
Counting the rakat
2 + 4 + 4 + 3 + 4 = 17 obligatory rakat every day. Each rakah is a cycle of standing, bowing and two prostrations.
The two witnesses
Fajr and Asr have special virtue: angels of the night and the day gather at these prayers, and the Prophet ﷺ said whoever prays them (al-bardayn) enters Paradise.
